Artist in Denial Course Details

A Creative Immersion Experience designed to help individuals rediscover and realize their creative potential, whether it be in the visual, writing or performance arts.

This is a 13 Week course based on The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron.

Students can choose classes on Wednesday evenings or Saturday mornings. Classes will meet at Gallery+ in 78th Streets Studios in the Gordon Square Arts District of Cleveland. If a student cannot attend classes in person, they can join via video conference from their computer or mobile device. Class size will be limited to six students. Classes will be an open discussion based on student insights from the prior week's work with The Artist's Way. This will be a chance for students to share their thoughts in an understanding and supportive environment.

What to Expect

Students should plan on spending 7-10 hours per week reading and doing the exercises in The Artist's Way. Students will attend 4 workshops during the 13-week period. Ideally, students will participate in workshops in various disciplines (some outside their comfort zone). Specific expertise is not necessary. The point is to discover the similarities in the creative process across different disciplines. In so doing, students will be able to apply things they've learned and enhance their creativity in their primary discipline. We call this concept Creative Cross Training. Workshops will typically be 2-3 hours long. Examples include: life drawing, drum circles, Zen tangle, glass blowing, working with clay, print making, origami, creative writing, jewelry making, and calligraphy.

There will also be optional creative outings in the Cleveland-area. These might include: attending a community/cultural festival like The Hessler Street Fair, the Cleveland Asian Festival, or Parade the Circle); seeing a classic film at the Capitol Theater; attending Brews and Prose or a poetry reading; catching a live jazz or blues band; visiting the Cleveland Museum of Art, MOCA, or another arts institution; seeing a live theater performance, or any other of the multitude of creative events happening in and around Cleveland.
